Northvolt is to devote US$200m in increasing its battery techniques capabilities in Gdansk, Poland.

Starting generation in 2022, the new manufacturing unit will have an original annual output of 5 GWh and possible potential potential of twelve GWh.

“Securing battery cell producing potential in Europe is vital for its industrial potential, but what is similarly vital is the industrial potential for integrating cells into genuine-planet answers,” stated Northvolt co-founder and CEO, Peter Carlsson.

“It is this the new manufacturing unit will provide subtle, sustainable energy storage systems to support the transformation of Europe’s electricity grid and its industry.”

The investment will facilitate a ramp-up in the manufacturing capacity of battery modules and techniques in purchase to fulfil contracts Northvolt has secured with customers seeking long-time period, substantial-quantity offer agreements for complete battery procedure solutions across grid and industrial markets.

The task builds on the firm’s start off-up of a battery techniques industrialisation plant in Gdansk in 2019.

The progress of the new manufacturing unit has currently begun with expectation the first phase of construction will commence in autumn, 2021, for a start off of generation in 2022.

The original phase of the task will establish an annual output of 5 GWh of modules and packs. A second phase of the task will see the factory expand to a total capacity of 12 GWh.

Which include a new engineering R&D centre of excellence to be recognized in conjunction with the factory expansion, the initiative will make 500 new jobs in the Gdansk region.

“Northvolt has been existing in Poland for a few a long time and we are amazed by both the professionalism and calibre of the engineers and producing staff we are engaged with in our routines below,” additional Northvolt Battery Systems president, Emad Zand.

The manufacturing unit will receive its offer of lithium-ion battery cells from the Northvolt Ett gigafactory, located in Skellefteå, Sweden.

As Northvolt’s ambition is to go on to establish on the very low emission generation platform recognized in Sweden within just its operations in Poland, the new manufacturing unit will be run with renewable electrical power, which includes on-site renewable electrical power era.
