Albemarle is to develop ability at the company’s lithium production facility in Silver Peak, Nevada and start a programme to assess clays and other readily available State resources for industrial production of lithium.

The business states as world wide demand from customers for electric cars grows, North American automotive makers are trying to find to regionalise their supply chain for bigger security and sustainability.

Albemarle’s investment in Silver Peak, which generates lithium from brine extracted from the Clayton Valley basin, will support this greater demand from customers for domestic supply of lithium.

Starting off this yr, the business ideas to invest US$30m to US$50m to double existing production at the Nevada site by 2025, earning complete use of its brine drinking water legal rights. Moreover, in 2021 the company plans to start exploration of clay and assess technology, which could speed up the viability of lithium production from clay resources in the region.

“As a leader in the lithium sector, our priority is to optimise our resources and production,” claimed Albemarle president, Lithium, Eric Norris.

“This includes Silver Peak, a site positioned as the only lithium-developing source in the United States. “This investment in domestic ability shows we are committed to wanting at the several approaches in which Silver Peak can provide domestic support for the escalating EV current market.”

In addition to analyzing clay resources, Albemarle is trying to find approaches to optimise lithium extraction from its brine resources, such as these in the Clayton Valley. Through a Department of Power-sponsored research project with Argonne National Laboratory, the company is investigating a procedure to streamline production of lithium hydroxide, which is principally utilised in EV batteries, from brine resources.

Albemarle’s domestic resources also include things like the 800-acre Kings Mountain, North Carolina, lithium site, which the provider notes, is a single of the richest spodumene ore deposits in the environment and dwelling to the company’s world wide lithium technical centre and piloting functions, as effectively as lithium-that contains brines in Arkansas.
