Li-Cycle to put US$175m into US recycling hub | Automotive Industry News

Li-Cycle says it will invest more than US$175m in its first commercial lithium-ion battery recycling Hub at Eastman Enterprise Park (EBP) in Rochester, New York.

The Hub is a moist chemistry/hydrometallurgical facility, which will refine battery-quality resources from ‘black mass’ generated from pre-processing put in lithium-ion batteries and will have the capability of processing substance from an equal of sixty,000 metric tonnes of put in lithium-ion batteries, roughly equating to a hundred and twenty,000 electric auto battery packs.

This will come in addition to its Spoke facility, set to be operational at the park by late 2020, which will generate ‘black mass’ from put in lithium-ion batteries.

Once totally operational, the Hub will be a significant producer of battery-quality resources in North America, especially cobalt, nickel and lithium. This will be the only supply of battery quality lithium carbonate in North America says Li-Cycle and the first commercial facility globally to generate battery quality lithium chemicals from put in lithium-ion batteries.

The Hub refines these crucial resources from anode and cathode active resources (‘black mass’) whilst obtaining optimum economics and minimising environmental impression.

With each other, the Hub and Spoke amenities minimise the over-all environmental footprint of the close-to-close resource restoration approach and allow a considerably lessened GHG emission depth when as opposed to principal output of the similar resources.

“We are fired up to be ready to announce Rochester as the area of Li-Cycle’s Hub refinery,” reported Li-Cycle government chairman and co-founder, Tim Johnston.

“This facility will allow sustainable closed loop output of crucial resources for the battery industry, this kind of as cobalt, nickel and lithium, appropriate here in North America, supporting the improvement of electric motor vehicles and other sustainable electricity purposes.”

Li-Cycle has previously run a demonstration Hub in Kingston, Ontario to determine essential structure standards for the build out of this first Business Hub. The corporation chosen EBP as the web site for the facility thanks to the mother nature of infrastructure out there, such as utilities, logistics and other physical infrastructure. Construction of the Hub facility is due to start in 2021 and is prepared to be totally operational in 2022.

Because its inception the corporation has designed and validated Li-Cycle’s Hub-and-Spoke technologies sustainable processes that allow for the recovery of all crucial resources found in lithium-ion batteries, able of manufacturing battery-quality resources this kind of as cobalt, lithium and nickel at purities essential for battery production.
